Duluth is located at the westernmost tip of Lake Superior, the largest freshwater
lake in the world, and is halfway between Minneapolis/St.Paul and
the Canadian border. The 30-mile (66km) long North Shore Scenic Drive offers
amazing views of the Superior National Forest on one side and Lake Superior
on the other. Duluth's waterfront showcases Canal Park, which has a unique aerial
lift bridge that rises to let massive seafaring vessels enter the harbor, the
retired ore carrier William A. Irvin and the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor
Center. Along the edge of the waterfront is the Lakewalk, a boardwalk with a
bike path and trail for carriage rides. Visitors to Duluth can choose from outdoor
activities like hiking, cross-country and downhill skiing, and snowmobiling--
there are many trails to explore. Fishing enthusiasts will like the salmon,
lake trout, sturgeon, walleye and other big-water fish in the area.
